Alexandra Eala Set to Battle Alycia Parks in Australian Open Debut

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Dubai: Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Eala is gearing up for her main draw debut at the Australian Open, going up against American player Alycia Parks, ranked No. 100, on Sunday, January 18.

At just 20 years of age, Eala has achieved a career-high ranking of No. 49 and enters the tournament showing exceptional form. Her recent matches indicate that she is peaking at the right moment.

Eala in Prime Condition

Eala delivered an impressive performance at the WTA ASB Classic in Auckland, reaching the semifinals before gaining further confidence with a win over Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic in an exhibition at the Kooyong Classic. These triumphs have set the stage for her Grand Slam debut.

Parks: A Force to Reckon With

Alycia Parks, 25, poses a significant challenge despite her lower ranking. Renowned for her powerful serve, Parks shares the record for the fastest serve in US Open history at an astonishing 129 mph, a feat she accomplished alongside Venus Williams. She clinched the title at the 2023 Lyon Open and advanced to the third round of the Australian Open two years ago.

First Encounter on Tour

This upcoming match represents the inaugural WTA Tour meeting between Eala and Parks. For Eala, it signifies an important milestone as she completes her appearances in the main draws of all four Grand Slam events.

What’s on the Line

“I truly believe this is the best level I’ve ever played at,” Eala stated following her warm-up matches in Melbourne. “I’m feeling good and hopeful to maintain this momentum.”

Should Eala succeed against Parks, she will encounter a formidable second-round opponent, either world No. 19 Karolína Muchová, a former French Open finalist, or Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, currently ranked 37.
