In a historic event, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, officially opened the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025). This significant conference, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, marks the inaugural occasion that the event is being hosted in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.

Focusing on the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” this conference has gathered over 4,500 museum professionals, cultural leaders, and influencers from across the globe—highlighting Dubai’s evolving status as a global hub for culture, creativity, and knowledge sharing.

The opening ceremony saw the presence of prominent UAE figures, including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, along with various ministers and cultural representatives from around the world.

A Celebration of Culture and Innovation

During the initial day, Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikha Latifa explored the Museum Fair, showcasing more than 100 international organizations presenting advanced technologies, interactive displays, and imaginative projects that redefine museum experiences. The fair acted as a center for partnership and collaboration, fostering new connections within the global museum sector.

Sheikha Latifa, Chairperson of Dubai Culture, delivered a passionate keynote speech, emphasizing Dubai’s unique ability to meld diverse cultures and ideas. She characterized the gathering as a “convergence of worlds” in which stories, traditions, and innovations unite to create a dynamic chronicle of human creativity. Reflecting on Dubai's rich cultural past, she noted that the city's robust foundation is built on exchange, creativity, and the welcoming of new perspectives.

Fostering Dialogue and Inclusivity

The opening discussions delved into topics such as Intangible Heritage, Youth Engagement, and Emerging Technologies, stressing the importance for museums to remain pertinent amid evolving societal landscapes. A noteworthy session entitled “AI and Museums: From Vision to Global Action,” convened experts from ICOM and UNESCO, exploring the transformative role of artificial intelligence in culture preservation and interpretation.

For the first time ever, Arabic has been designated as an official language at ICOM—a significant milestone underscoring the region’s enhanced prominence in the international cultural arena.

Empowering the Next Generation

The first day also hosted engaging workshops and mentoring opportunities for young professionals, including “Reverse Mentoring: Empowering Youth for Museums and Heritage,” organized by Singapore’s National Heritage Board. Specialists from institutions like Art Jameel and NYU Abu Dhabi shared valuable insights into future leadership in museums, conservation practices, and digital advancements.

Workshops also featured masterclasses on “Strategies for Conservation,” led by global experts, examining both traditional methods and tech-forward approaches to preservation.

As ICOM Dubai 2025 unfolds throughout the week, the city emerges as a nexus where heritage collides with innovation, and history fuels future endeavors. Through this global event, Dubai expresses its commitment to being not only a venue for international gatherings but also a cornerstone for creativity, dialogue, and shared human experiences.
