Dubai has charted a daring new course for its media sector, as His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum led a pivotal Dubai Media Council meeting, advocating for the media sector's GDP contribution to grow from 1.4% to 3% by 2033. This initiative mirrors the emirate's commitment to enhancing the significance of media within the broader Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
During the meeting, Sheikh Ahmed underscored that the media industry possesses vast unrealized potential and can contribute more significantly to shaping Dubai's economic and global standing. He emphasized the necessity for robust collaboration between public and private media entities, supported by transparent governance and conducive policies to enable sustainable growth.
A primary focus of the discussion was the acceleration of digital transformation. Sheikh Ahmed remarked that Dubai’s media needs to adapt to rapidly evolving technology, emphasizing that digital platforms play a crucial role in community engagement and the emirate’s international footprint. He reiterated the significance of creating innovative digital solutions and generating content that mirrors Dubai's progressive leadership and contemporary identity.
The Council evaluated performance metrics established for 2033, which include bolstering media exports, increasing local content production, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing Dubai's outreach to regional and global audiences. Committees focused on film and gaming development have already been established to aid the burgeoning creative sectors.
Her Excellency Mona Al Marri mentioned that the transition of regulatory oversight to the Dubai Media Council under Law No. 29 of 2024 has improved efficiency and aligned the sector with international benchmarks. She stated that the revamped regulatory structure reinforces Dubai's status as a creative and professional media hub.
The meeting also spotlighted initiatives designed to cultivate young Emirati talent. These include programmes focused on leadership and skill development, along with the newly formed Dubai Film and Games Forum, aimed at supporting the next generation of media professionals.
Sheikh Ahmed endorsed the updated digital strategy of Dubai Media Incorporated, which advocates for the growth of the “Awaan” platform, investment in original productions, and enhanced audience interaction via emerging formats such as podcasts. DMI's goal is to establish a dynamic digital presence fueled by youth-centric storytelling and globally resonant Emirati narratives.
Young members of the DMI Youth Council participated, reflecting ongoing efforts to empower future leaders. The session wrapped up with discussions involving participants from media talent programmes aimed at equipping second- and third-tier national leaders for increased responsibilities within the industry.
Dubai’s recent roadmap signals a decade marked by accelerated innovation, enhanced global visibility, and a renewed commitment to cementing the emirate's status as a premier media powerhouse.
