In a tragic incident, a young driver has admitted his role in the death of a teenager recently released from Dubai prison following a crash in north London.
Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, aged 20, entered a guilty plea on Friday for causing the death of 19-year-old Marcus Fakana through dangerous driving after a police chase that culminated in a catastrophic collision in Tottenham. Huseen also acknowledged inflicting serious injury on another passenger, along with driving without a valid license or insurance.
The event unfolded in the early hours of 3 October last year, as Huseen drove a BMW with two passengers. Metropolitan Police had attempted to stop what they categorized as a “vehicle of interest” on Pretoria Road. Following a brief chase, police momentarily lost track of the car.
Shortly thereafter, responders found the BMW had collided with a lorry in The Roundway area of Tottenham, resulting in a severe impact.
Marcus Fakana, a passenger in the vehicle, was promptly transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later. Another passenger sustained serious injuries requiring medical attention.
Huseen appeared via video link from HMP Pentonville at Wood Green Crown Court, where he admitted to causing Fakana’s death via dangerous driving and acknowledged serious injury to the second passenger, as well as driving uninsured and without a license.
The case has gained significant media attention largely due to Fakana’s recent high-profile release from UAE custody.
Just three months prior to the tragedy, Fakana from Tottenham, was freed after spending nearly a year in a UAE prison stemming from events during a family holiday in 2024. His imprisonment had drawn considerable concern and media scrutiny in the UK, resulting in a royal pardon from Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His family had high hopes for his future after his return.
Sadly, his life was abruptly ended in a London street in a matter of seconds.
Prosecutors reported that Huseen attempted to escape police when the accident occurred. Although the officers had briefly lost sight of the BMW during the chase, they arrived just in time to witness the wreck and the grave injuries of the occupants.
Following the hearing, Huseen was remanded in custody, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for 27 February.
This tragedy has reignited calls for stricter regulations regarding dangerous driving and police pursuits in populated areas of London.
For Fakana’s family, this incident represents a heartbreaking conclusion to a narrative that had recently begun to shine with promise. After enduring a year in prison overseas and returning home, he lost his life far too soon.
