Manchester City faced a significant blow to their Premier League title ambitions on Sunday night as Chelsea secured a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, courtesy of a last-minute strike from Enzo Fernandez.
City dominated much of the match and took the lead just before half-time when Tijjani Reijnders delivered a powerful finish, reflecting their control over the first half as they kept Chelsea largely restricted.
However, the second half unfolded differently. A disruption in City’s defensive lineup, due to injuries to both Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, allowed Chelsea to regain confidence and advance their play, looking for scoring chances.
As stoppage time approached, it seemed City would claim all three points, but a critical defensive error enabled Chelsea’s breakthrough. In the 94th minute, a well-placed low cross found Enzo Fernandez alone at the far post, and he calmly slotted it in, silencing the Etihad and earning a vital equaliser.
Following this match, City remains second on goal difference, edging out Aston Villa, yet trails league leaders Arsenal by six points. For Chelsea, still without a permanent manager, this late equaliser marked a statement of their resilience amid a challenging season, while City needs to ponder yet another pivotal misstep in their title campaign.
