Denmark and Greenland Urge U.S. to Reject Trump's Greenland Plans

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a determined diplomatic initiative, Denmark and Greenland are urging the U.S. to counter former President Donald Trump’s recent proposals for the acquisition of Greenland, a geopolitically significant Arctic territory.

During a meeting held on Thursday, Denmark's ambassador to the U.S., Jesper Møller Sørensen, and Jacob Isbosethsen, Greenland’s chief representative in Washington, consulted with officials from the White House National Security Council. The discussions centered on Trump's recent assertions suggesting the United States could seek to obtain Greenland, with implications that military force might be considered.

While the Danish officials confirmed the meeting, they requested anonymity for confidentiality reasons. The White House has not issued any comments in response to inquiries regarding these discussions.

Besides their discussions with the White House, the Danish and Greenlandic representatives are actively engaging with U.S. lawmakers to generate political momentum against any takeover attempts.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is anticipated to meet Danish officials next week, providing another platform to delve into the topic further.

Greenland, an autonomous region under Danish sovereignty, is strategically vital due to its position within the Arctic circle.
