Tragic Train Derailment in Thailand: Crane Collapse Claims 22 Lives

Post by : Mina Rahman

A tragic event unfolded in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday morning, when a construction crane fell onto a passenger train, resulting in 22 fatalities and over 30 injuries, according to authorities.

The incident transpired in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, situated approximately 230 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. The train was en route from the capital to Ubon Ratchathani province when disaster struck.

Local police revealed that the crane was part of a high-speed rail project currently underway, close to the railway track. As the train traversed the region, the crane unexpectedly collapsed, striking one of the carriages with immense force. This caused several carriages to derail, with a brief fire erupting in a section of the train.

Emergency services including police, firefighters, and medical teams were quickly deployed to the scene. Rescuers faced thick smoke emerging from the wreckage while battling to extinguish the flames and search for survivors. Firefighters successfully managed to control the blaze, ensuring it did not spread further along the train.

In challenging conditions, rescue teams worked tirelessly for several hours, utilizing heavy cutting equipment to penetrate the twisted wreckage and reach those trapped inside. Many injured passengers received initial medical aid on-site before being transported to local hospitals for advanced care.

Videos circulating on social media captured the frantic atmosphere at the crash site as emergency workers carried away injured individuals amidst scattered debris. Authorities implemented a security perimeter around the area to facilitate safe rescue and recovery efforts.

Police confirmed that all injured passengers were evacuated and that medical support continued. Rail operations along the affected path were temporarily halted for damage assessment and track clearance.

An inquiry has been initiated to uncover the reasons behind the crane's failure. Officials are currently investigating potential safety violations, mechanical malfunctions, or human errors involved. No additional details have been disclosed at this time.

This tragic accident has sparked renewed scrutiny over construction safety regulations near active rail lines, urging authorities to enforce stricter safety protocols during major infrastructural developments.
