Severe Winter Storm Claims 10 Lives and Causes Outages Across the US

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Washington: A devastating winter storm is sweeping through much of the United States, resulting in the death of at least 10 individuals and disrupting daily life significantly. Among the major issues reported are flight cancellations, widespread power outages, and hazardous travel conditions. Officials are advising citizens to remain indoors as dangerously low temperatures prevail across the nation.

The storm is characterized by heavy snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain affecting multiple states. Weather experts warn that an incoming Arctic air mass may prolong dangerously low temperatures, exacerbating the ongoing crisis.

In New York, Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported that five individuals were discovered deceased outdoors during the frigid weekend. Texas has reported three fatalities, including a tragic sledding accident involving a 16-year-old girl, while Louisiana authorities confirmed two deaths attributed to hypothermia.

Power outages are impacting over 840,000 residents, primarily in the southern regions. Tennessee alone recorded upwards of 300,000 outages, with Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia each reporting more than 100,000 customers without electricity. Officials are emphasizing that prolonged outages could pose life-threats due to the frigid conditions.

Currently, a state of emergency is in effect for at least 20 states and Washington DC. Federal offices in the capital have been closed, and significant snowfall has blanketed roads and sidewalks. Major airports in Washington, Philadelphia, and New York have canceled nearly all flights, contributing to over 19,000 cancellations nationwide since Saturday.

This storm is associated with a stretched polar vortex driving Arctic air into the continent. Climate scientists suggest that while natural factors contribute, climate change may also be influencing such extreme weather phenomena.

The National Weather Service alerts indicate that wind chill factors may plunge below -50°F (-45°C) in certain areas, a condition that could lead to frostbite in only minutes. Officials nationwide are urging individuals to stay home and avoid any unnecessary travel.
