In an extraordinary feat for their footballing history, Curacao has officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time. This small Caribbean island, home to over 150,000 residents, is set to showcase its talent on the world’s premier football stage in 2026, an achievement that underscores the potential of a nation often overshadowed by larger countries.
Curacao's accomplishment stands out especially when compared to records of the past. Previously, the smallest nation to compete in the World Cup was Iceland in 2018, yet Curacao, spanning only 171 square miles, has now claimed its spot among elite football nations worldwide.
A decade ago, Curacao stood at 150th in FIFA's world rankings. Their perseverance has paid off as they currently sit at 82nd, reflecting a steady rise boosted by effective leadership, excellent coaching, and a roster of skilled players committed to achieving greatness.
Achieving sovereignty as part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010, Curacao transformed its football program within just over ten years, reaching the coveted World Cup qualification.
Their qualification journey culminated in a successful campaign where they secured victories in seven of ten qualifying matches, ending without a loss. Throughout this quest, Curacao displayed extraordinary teamwork, discipline, and relentless spirit.
Tensions mounted during the dramatic final moments of their last match when a potential penalty against Curacao loomed. In a nail-biting twist, a VAR review led to the penalty being overturned, much to the relief of Curacao’s players and supporters, who quickly began celebrating this milestone.
As debutants at the 2026 World Cup, Curacao joins other nations like Cape Verde, Uzbekistan, and Jordan in making their first appearance. The tournament's expanded format, increasing the number of teams from 32 to 48, provided an opportunity for more nations to participate.
With hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States qualifying automatically, additional spots were generously available for teams from the region, and Curacao seized this crucial moment.
Midfielder Juninho Bacuna highlighted the significance of this achievement for Curacao, referring to it as a monumental milestone in the country’s history. Just years ago, such aspirations seemed remote; now, they stand on the brink of realization.
Curacao's coaching legend, Dick Advocaat, at 78, is poised to make history as the oldest coach to lead a team at the World Cup, surpassing a record set in 2010.
Alongside Curacao, Haiti and Panama will also make their World Cup appearances, with Haiti clinching qualification for the first time since 1974 after a decisive win against Nicaragua, while Panama confirmed their position.
Meanwhile, Jamaica, missing their direct qualification opportunity, will need to contest in the Intercontinental Play-Offs.
Curacao’s qualification is a testament to their grit and resilience, symbolizing not just a sporting achievement but a national narrative of hope and ambition. As they gear up for the 2026 World Cup, Curacao is set to proudly represent its vibrant spirit on a global platform for the very first time.
