Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill is racing against time to achieve fitness for the second Test against South Africa, scheduled for November 22 in Guwahati. Gill sustained a neck injury on Day 2 of the first Test in Kolkata and required medical tests afterward, remaining under observation before his discharge the following day.
The injury raised concerns among fans and management alike, particularly as India is down 0-1 in this vital series. Although initial reports indicated he might miss the trip, the cricket board has since confirmed that Gill will join the team in Guwahati.
An official update from the cricket board detailed that Gill has been responding positively to his treatment and is stable enough for travel with the squad.
Nonetheless, the board stated that his participation in the second Test is still in question. Medical staff will continue monitoring his condition, and a final determination on playing status will be made after further evaluations.
Although Gill is traveling with the team, this does not confirm he will play. The priority remains his long-term health and career.
Despite confirmation of his travels, internal sources suggest he is highly unlikely to participate in Guwahati. Reports indicate that doctors recommended against traveling, as movement could exacerbate his injury.
A source indicated that Gill wishes to remain with the squad as captain to boost team morale, especially given India's current series deficit. The source also noted that his participation would require a "medical miracle," as even minor strain could severely affect his career.
A final decision regarding his playing status is expected on November 21, post a complete medical evaluation.
In the event of Gill not playing, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will take charge. Pant has recently returned to international cricket following an injury break and may be called upon to lead during this critical match.
India lost the first Test by 30 runs at Eden Gardens, elevating the stakes for the upcoming match that is crucial to leveling the series. Pant's leadership will be pivotal if Gill does not play.
Changes in the squad may also occur for the second Test, with reports suggesting that Nitish Kumar Reddy might rejoin the team. Reddy, who boasts a Test century, had previously been released to participate in an unofficial ODI series.
With Gill's availability in doubt and India in need of a compelling performance to equalize the series, Reddy's return could solidify the middle order.
India trails 0-1 in the two-match series, underscoring the critical nature of the Guwahati Test. The team will face immense pressure to perform without their captain and key batsman.
The management remains hopeful for Gill's swift recovery while emphasizing the need for caution regarding his long-term health. As preparations intensify for the crucial match, all attention will fixate on the final medical update scheduled before the Test.
