Sidney Crosby is on the verge of achieving a significant milestone with the Pittsburgh Penguins as he edges towards surpassing Mario Lemieux for the highest number of regular-season points in franchise history. Currently, Crosby trails Lemieux by only seven points, while he already holds the franchise record for combined regular and post-season points.
In a commanding display on Monday, Crosby netted his 58th and 59th career goals against the Philadelphia Flyers, propelling the Penguins to a 5-1 win. His performance against Philadelphia is unparalleled, with 59 goals and 137 points recorded in 92 games — more than any opponent has achieved against the Flyers.
“I’m sure [Lemieux] understands that I’m not keen on discussing it,” Crosby remarked on the prospect of breaking the record. “I just want to focus on my game. If it happens, it happens.”
At age 38, Crosby has amassed 1,716 career points, closing in on Lemieux’s 1,723. He has been instrumental in leading the Penguins to three Stanley Cup victories under Lemieux’s ownership in 2009, 2016, and 2017.
Crosby’s stellar performance against the Flyers remains historic, beginning with his 60th career road game-opening goal and adding another through a power play wrist shot in the second period. This win also ended Philadelphia’s three-game winning streak and allowed Pittsburgh to recover from a recent 7-2 defeat against Toronto.
Despite a challenging start to the season, with seven losses out of nine games in November, Crosby remains pivotal in Pittsburgh's aspirations in the Metropolitan Division. Tied with the Flyers at 31 points, the team relies heavily on Crosby’s leadership and expertise to stay competitive.
“He exemplifies what it means to be an exceptional player and individual, always striving for more,” remarked teammate Bryan Rust, who contributed a goal and two assists in the game. “It seems to fuel him even further.”
With the NHL goals lead also within reach, Crosby’s pursuit of records continues to energize fans and give the Penguins a distinctive advantage in every matchup.
