Starbucks Korea's Ad Sparks Outrage, Chairman Responds

Post by : Shakul

Starbucks Korea is currently embroiled in a significant controversy following a marketing campaign that has been perceived as disrespectful to the victims of the pro-democracy movement in Gwangju. The uproar has prompted Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin to issue a second public apology in just two weeks as discontent grows among activists, politicians, and the general populace.

In a televised address from Seoul, Chung bowed repeatedly while expressing his apologies to the victims' families from the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and to citizens nationwide. He admitted that the campaign inflicted emotional distress due to its insensitive references to this dark chapter in the nation’s history.

The issue arose when Starbucks Korea promoted a large tumbler dubbed “tank” while declaring May 18 as “Tank Day.” This date is profoundly important in South Korea as it marks the anniversary of the 1980 Gwangju uprising, where military forces utilized tanks and helicopters to violently quell pro-democracy protests, leading to numerous deaths and injuries.

The public's anger surged when it was noted that the campaign included the phrase “Thwack it on the table,” which echoes a notorious statement made in relation to the torture murder case of student activist Park Jong-chol in 1987. Critics believe this message trivialized the suffering experienced during South Korea’s military regime.

Social media exploded with backlash, prompting Starbucks Korea to retract the campaign almost immediately. Additionally, as pressure from civil groups and families of Gwangju victims mounted, the company announced the dismissal of its Korean operations chief. Authorities later confirmed that an investigation had been opened following complaints lodged by victims’ families.

In his remarks, Chung Yong-jin requested that the public not direct their anger toward Starbucks employees, underscoring that the firm's management must take responsibility for the incident. Company representatives have indicated that their preliminary investigations uncovered no concrete evidence of intentional mockery by the marketing team, but inquiries are still ongoing.

Reports have surfaced indicating that some employees resisted surrendering their smartphones during the internal review. Officials have stated that any employee found to have willfully mocked the victims or associated historical events could potentially face immediate termination based on the investigation's findings.

The backlash has ignited calls for a national boycott of Starbucks Korea products. Various government officials have openly criticized the campaign, including Yoon Ho-jung, the Interior and Safety Minister, who announced that Starbucks products would no longer be utilized at government functions. President Lee Jae Myung also condemned the ad, labeling it “inhumane and disgraceful.”

The Gwangju uprising holds a crucial place in South Korean democratic history, as public dissatisfaction with military rule ultimately led to widespread protests in 1987 and the establishment of direct presidential elections, paving the way to modern democracy. Analysts note that this incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding historical memories within South Korean society.
