In a heart-wrenching incident in Seoul, three workers have died, and three others have sustained injuries due to the partial collapse of an old overpass undergoing demolition on Tuesday. Emergency services reported that the mishap unfolded during a safety check at the demolition site, prompting an extensive rescue operation in the South Korean capital.
Local fire authorities indicated that demolition was briefly halted after workers observed a slight settling of the aged structure while concrete cutting was in progress. A sudden failure of a section of the bridge deck unleashed heavy debris, concrete, and steel onto workers below.
The victims were tragically trapped under the wreckage when the overpass collapsed. Rescue teams responded swiftly, working for hours to clear debris and search for any additional victims. Those injured were transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent care.
Emergency measures were promptly enacted, sealing off roads and areas nearby to mitigate any further hazards. Photographs from the site depict twisted steel, shattered concrete slabs, and precariously hanging sections of the bridge looming over adjacent streets. Police and safety personnel established no-go zones as engineers evaluated the remaining structure's integrity.
The disaster also halted train operations in the vicinity as debris fell on a nearby rail line. The Korea Railroad Corporation temporarily suspended select train services linked to Seoul Station while cleanup and safety reviews were conducted. Authorities began restoring normal rail service soon after.
Officials revealed that the overpass—constructed in 1966—had recently been deemed structurally unsound due to age-related concerns. Demolition efforts had been ongoing since last August as part of a larger infrastructure safety initiative by city officials.
An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the precise reasons behind the collapse and to evaluate adherence to safety regulations during demolition operations. Authorities will scrutinize engineering reviews, site protocols, and equipment conditions in this tragic case.
This incident has reignited public anxiety regarding the state of aging infrastructure and construction safety protocols in South Korea. Experts caution that numerous older bridges and urban buildings may be overdue for inspections and updates to avert similar tragedies in the future.
