India Reports Alarming Rise in Chronic Kidney Disease Cases for 2023

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

According to a recent study from The Lancet, India is now the second-highest nation globally in chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases, with around 138 million affected individuals in 2023. China leads with 152 million cases. CKD is becoming one of the top mortality causes globally, ranking ninth and resulting in nearly 1.5 million deaths last year.

Escalating Global Health Emergency

This research points to a critical health challenge across various continents. North Africa and the Middle East show the highest CKD prevalence at 18%, followed closely by South Asia at 16%. Meanwhile, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America each have rates exceeding 15%. Healthcare disparities further intensify the disease burden in already vulnerable regions.

CKD’s Dangerous Connection to Heart Disease

CKD represents more than just a renal issue; it significantly impacts cardiovascular health. In 2023, nearly 12% of heart-related deaths worldwide were attributed to kidney disease, positioning CKD as the seventh leading cause of heart mortality, ahead of established conditions like diabetes and obesity.

Primary Risk Factors Behind the Increase

The study pinpointed fourteen crucial risk factors, with diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity being key contributors to health detriments. Unhealthy dietary habits like insufficient fruit and vegetable intake alongside elevated sodium consumption also notably heighten risks.

Many patients were diagnosed in the early stages, highlighting the necessity of regular screenings and preventive measures. Timely interventions can decelerate disease advancement, lessen cardiovascular complications, and delay the requirement for dialysis or transplants—often limited in numerous areas.

Crucial Focus on Prevention and Early Treatment

As CKD cases continue to escalate, the emphasis on prevention, timely diagnosis, and accessible treatment has become critically important. Modifying lifestyles, adopting balanced diets, and improving healthcare access could alleviate the escalating burden on global communities.
