Italy took a significant step towards their third consecutive Davis Cup title with a thrilling 2-0 semi-final victory over Belgium on Friday. The standout performer was Flavio Cobolli, who delivered a nail-biting performance that will be etched in the tournament’s history. His victory, characterized by intense emotion and unwavering resolve, paved the way for Italy’s third final appearance in succession.
At just 23, Cobolli showcased his talent before a spirited home crowd at the SuperTennis Arena. The enthusiastic fans buoyed him throughout, which proved vital. Cobolli triumphed over Zizou Bergs of Belgium with a score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(15), a match marked by a dramatic and protracted final-set tiebreak that extended to 32 points, making it one of the most electrifying moments in Davis Cup history.
Both athletes delivered fierce and daring tennis, filled with long rallies and dynamic hitting that kept the audience enthralled. Bergs' aggressive style nearly forced the tie into a deciding doubles match, while Cobolli grappled with finishing the contest, having failed to convert his first six match points. Nevertheless, he showcased remarkable perseverance, sealing the victory on his seventh match point with an unreturnable serve that ignited exuberant celebrations among the Italian supporters.
Italy’s captain, Filippo Volandri, hailed Cobolli’s performance, stating, “In my five years as captain, I’ve never witnessed anything like this. The match was extraordinary; it was 5 percent tactics and 95 percent heart.” His remarks underscored the remarkable fighting spirit Cobolli exhibited.
Earlier, Matteo Berrettini set the tone for Italy by winning his match against Belgium's Raphael Collignon 6-3, 6-4. This victory marked Berrettini’s eighth consecutive win in the Davis Cup, reflecting his crucial role in Italy’s recent successes, including last year's triumph where he won all six matches played.
Now, Italy is set to face either Germany or Spain in the upcoming final. A win would mark Italy as the first nation to achieve three consecutive Davis Cup trophies since the Challenge Round format was discontinued in 1971; a momentous occasion for the team and Italian tennis.
With top players like world number two Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti unavailable, Cobolli has risen to the occasion, showcasing his prowess by defeating Filip Misolic in the quarter-finals and bravely overcoming a significant challenge from Bergs. His victory exemplifies his mental fortitude, patience, and ability to perform under pressure.
Post-match, Cobolli remarked, “It’s really difficult to articulate my feelings about this match. I played for my team, my family, and it’s truly one of the best days of my life.” His heartfelt statement highlighted the profound impact of this win on him both personally and for his team.
Italy is currently enjoying a 12-tie winning streak in the Davis Cup and is the first team to reach three consecutive finals since Australia did so in 2001. While Australia faced setbacks in those finals, Italy aims to seize this opportunity and carve out a new chapter in their tennis legacy.
With stalwarts like Berrettini and the rising star Cobolli, Italy heads into Sunday’s final brimming with confidence and optimism. They stand just one victory away from achieving a rare Davis Cup three-peat, a feat accomplished by only a select few nations.
