Investigation Launched into CISA Director for Data Upload

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The acting director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Madhu Gottumukkala, is currently under scrutiny following reports of sensitive government contracting documents being uploaded to the public version of ChatGPT.

Media sources indicate that the documents were labeled “For Official Use Only”, suggesting their sensitivity, although not classified. In August 2025, CISA's automated cybersecurity systems flagged these uploads, triggering an internal alert.

Gottumukkala has held the position of acting CISA director since May 2025. He received temporary approval to utilize ChatGPT in a government initiative focused on exploring artificial intelligence tools. In contrast, most staff at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are prohibited from using public AI platforms due to data security issues.

The DHS has initiated a review to assess whether the uploaded content jeopardized government security. The outcomes of the investigation have yet to be disclosed.

Concerns are rising due to the fact that public AI platforms may retain user inputs for system improvements, whereas DHS employs internal AI tools such as DHSChat, which are intended to keep government information secure within federal systems.

CISA has stated that Gottumukkala's access to ChatGPT was limited and temporary, while the use of public AI tools remains blocked for the majority of employees. This situation has ignited a broader discussion about how government entities can leverage artificial intelligence while safeguarding sensitive information.
