Anthropic Co-founder Advocates for Global AI Regulation at Vatican Conference

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Chris Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, emphasized on Monday that the evolution of artificial intelligence should not be solely in the hands of tech companies. He advocated for more extensive regulatory measures from governmental bodies, religious leaders, and civil society.

During the unveiling of Pope Leo's inaugural encyclical related to AI, Olah expressed concerns that the technology could result in significant job displacement, warning that numerous jobs might soon be eliminated by AI advancements.

He underscored that should this come to fruition, it would become a vital ethical obligation for society to support those affected by such changes.

Olah further articulated that AI firms often operate under intense commercial, political, and personal pressures that might not align with societal welfare. These dynamics can hinder their ability to act in the public’s best interest, even with well-meaning researchers. Hence, he contended that outside regulatory oversight is imperative.

Anthropic, known for its Claude AI system, has previously encountered conflicts with political entities over issues concerning the military utilization of AI, such as automated weapon targeting and domestic surveillance operations.

Olah praised the Catholic Church's involvement in AI discourse, highlighting that the moral implications of AI stretch far beyond the realms of technology and engineering.

He identified three primary issues: the threat of widespread job loss, the necessity for equitable distribution of AI's benefits, and the complexities of increasingly sophisticated AI systems.

Additionally, he pointed out that AI development is predominantly localized in affluent nations, raising pertinent issues regarding global disparities. He questioned how AI's advantages could be more equitably shared worldwide.

This event served as a unique convergence of the tech sector and the Catholic Church, enabling both entities to deliberate on the ethical and social ramifications of swiftly evolving artificial intelligence.
