China Calls for Reevaluation of UNIFIL Withdrawal from Lebanon

Post by : Shakul

Fu Cong has stressed the necessity for a reassessment of the United Nations peacekeeping mission's planned withdrawal from Lebanon, citing escalating tensions in the region. His remarks were made during a speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 2, 2026.

This statement from China arrives at a critical juncture, as the Lebanese situation remains perilous despite a proclaimed ceasefire. Fu Cong pointed out that the latest conditions signify reduced conflict rather than genuine peace.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, commonly referred to as UNIFIL, has been instrumental in ensuring stability in southern Lebanon for many years. Initially established to supervise the withdrawal of Israeli troops, its role expanded after the considerable conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.

In the previous year, the United Nations Security Council reached a consensus to gradually withdraw UNIFIL forces, anticipating a complete cessation of the mission by December 2026. Nevertheless, multiple nations are now reexamining this decision in light of deteriorating security circumstances.

Fu Cong remarked that several Security Council members believe the current moment is ill-suited for the withdrawal of peacekeeping troops, emphasizing the essential role of UNIFIL in maintaining stability and curbing further hostility in the area.

Recently, Lebanon has faced heightened conflict, exemplified by ongoing airstrikes and firefights. Reports indicate that casualties have soared, with thousands dead and over a million individuals displaced due to the violence.

UN peacekeepers have confronted severe risks during this turmoil. Numerous personnel from various nations have suffered casualties while fulfilling their missions, including tasks like dismantling explosives and facilitating humanitarian aid.

Antonio Guterres has vocally condemned the assaults on peacekeepers, underscoring that they were engaged in vital work when attacked. He urged for enhanced protective measures for UN staff operating in conflict-prone areas.

China has indicated its intention to await a comprehensive report from the United Nations prior to finalizing its stance, yet it has clearly articulated the need for a thorough reevaluation of the withdrawal plan to ensure regional peace and stability.
