China Becomes Japan’s Biggest Security Concern, New Government Survey Shows

Post by : Saif Nasser

A new government survey has revealed a major shift in how people in Japan view national security. For the first time, China’s growing military power has become the top security concern for the Japanese public, surpassing worries about North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

According to the poll, 68 percent of respondents said China’s military expansion and its actions near Japan and in the South China Sea are their biggest concern. This number has increased sharply from 61 percent when the same survey was conducted three years ago. The results show growing public unease about China’s role in the region.

The survey began in early November, just before Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks that led to serious diplomatic tensions with Beijing. She said Japan could deploy its forces if a Chinese attack on Taiwan threatened Japan’s survival. China reacted strongly, demanding that the statement be withdrawn.

In response, Beijing warned its citizens against traveling to Japan and hinted at restricting exports of rare earth materials, which are vital for modern industries. China has also carried out military drills near Japan and conducted large war games around Taiwan involving missiles, warships, and aircraft.

The poll also showed record-high public support for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. An overwhelming 94 percent of respondents said they have a favorable view of the military. This reflects growing trust in the armed forces as regional tensions rise.

These findings come as the Japanese government prepares its next defense strategy. Japan is expected to increase defense spending further, continuing its plan to double military outlays to 2 percent of GDP. Although Japan’s post-war constitution limits its ability to wage war, the country remains one of the world’s largest defense spenders.

China has criticized Japan’s military plans, accusing Tokyo of increasing regional tensions. Beijing has also warned Japan not to interfere in the Taiwan issue, which China considers a domestic matter.

The survey highlights a changing security mindset in Japan. As power struggles grow in East Asia, public opinion is increasingly shaping how the country prepares for future challenges.
