China has carried out the execution of 11 people who were convicted for their involvement in large scam operations based in Myanmar. According to state media reports, the move shows China’s strict approach toward cybercrime and organized fraud that has harmed thousands of victims.
The convicted individuals were part of criminal groups that ran scam centers across the China-Myanmar border. These operations were linked to online fraud, illegal gambling, unlawful detention, physical abuse and even killings. Chinese courts found that the crimes caused severe financial losses and led to the deaths and injuries of several Chinese citizens.
The case was handled by a court in eastern China, and the verdict went through a mandatory review by the country’s highest court before the executions were approved. Authorities said the evidence against the accused was strong and clear, leaving no doubt about their role in serious crimes.
Scam operations in border areas of Myanmar have been a growing concern for many countries. These centers often trick people with fake investment offers, romance scams and job promises. Victims are persuaded to send money, while some workers inside these compounds are forced to participate under threats and violence.
China has repeatedly warned its citizens about overseas scam networks and has worked with neighboring countries to shut down such illegal operations. In recent years, thousands of suspects have been brought back to China from Southeast Asia as part of joint law-enforcement efforts.
Officials say these scams do not only involve fraud but are closely connected to human trafficking and organized crime. Many people are lured abroad with promises of good jobs and then trapped, beaten or threatened if they refuse to take part in scams.
The executions underline China’s zero-tolerance policy toward crimes that threaten public safety and social stability. Authorities believe harsh punishment will act as a warning to others involved in similar activities.
However, the use of the death penalty continues to raise concerns among international human rights groups, who argue that long-term solutions should focus on stronger international cooperation and protection for victims.
As online fraud becomes more advanced and crosses borders easily, countries face growing pressure to work together. China’s latest action sends a strong message, but the wider fight against cybercrime remains a shared global challenge.
