Cebu Landfill Incident: One Fatality and Many Missing as Rescue Efforts Persist

Post by : Mina Rahman

A devastating incident occurred at a waste segregation site in Cebu City when a massive heap of debris suddenly caved in, engulfing workers beneath layers of refuse. Authorities report one confirmed fatality, numerous injuries, and dozens of individuals still unaccounted for.

The disaster happened at a landfill located in the Binaliw area, where emergency crews worked tirelessly overnight to rescue those trapped. So far, at least eight people have been rescued alive; however, one female worker succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital. Several others are currently receiving treatment for their wounds.

Conflicting information has surfaced regarding the number of individuals still missing. While police indicated at least 27 workers were trapped, city officials later suggested the real number might be even higher. As rescue operations persist, the availability of precise data is hampered by poor communication at the site.

Mayor Nestor Archival reassured citizens that emergency services are fully engaged and adhering to all necessary safety protocols. He highlighted the government's commitment to transparency and support for those impacted by the disaster.

The landfill, managed by a private waste company, handles about 1,000 tons of waste daily and employs over 100 staff members. Records show that several administrative buildings were crushed under the enormous weight of the trash pile, which was estimated to stand as tall as a four-storey structure.

Authorities stated that dry weather prevailed during the incident, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collapse. An emergency meeting has been scheduled, involving city officials and landfill management, to review the situation and formulate a plan of action.

As rescuers continue their search for survivors, families are left anxiously awaiting news about their missing loved ones.
