Severe Winter Weather Conditions Impact Canada, Alerts for Snow and Ice Issued

Post by : Mina Rahman

Canada is currently grappling with significant winter storms that are affecting numerous provinces, unleashing heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and strong winds, raising concerns over flooding risks.

In the Atlantic provinces, winter storm warnings are in effect for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and parts of Newfoundland, where snowfall amounts could be between 25–40 cm. Visitors should be cautious as gusty winds may significantly limit visibility. Coastal areas may experience rain transitioning into heavy wet snow, potentially complicating travel.

Central Alberta and western Saskatchewan are encountering freezing rain, while western Alberta is facing additional snowfall that could accumulate up to 30 cm over a two-day period. Roads and sidewalks are treacherous, prompting officials to alert residents to remain vigilant.

In British Columbia, Metro Vancouver and surrounding regions are under rainfall warnings with anticipated precipitation of 50–70 mm. Flood advisories are activated for rivers and streams, while northern inland areas face snowstorms that may drop as much as 30 cm.

Ontario is not exempt, as snow squalls impact regions near the Great Lakes. Some areas could see accumulations of up to 40 cm, resulting in rapidly worsening road conditions.

Authorities nationwide are urging residents to limit travel, prepare for hazardous road conditions, and stay informed as Canada endures one of its most challenging winter weather sequences this season.
