Canada Stuns New Zealand 34-19 to Reach Women’s Rugby World Cup Final

In one of the biggest upsets of this Women’s Rugby World Cup, Canada delivered a standout performance to defeat defending champions New Zealand 34-19 in the semi-final. The win snaps New Zealand’s decade-long dominance in World Cup semi-final matches, and sends Canada to the final for only the second time in their history.

Early Dominance Sets the Tone

Canada exploded out of the gate, scoring four tries in the first half via Justine Pelletier, Asia Hogan-Rochester, Florence Symonds, and Sophie de Goede. By halftime they had built a strong lead, which they bolstered early in the second half through a try by their captain, Alex Tessier.

New Zealand’s Fightback Falls Short

Although the Black Ferns mounted a comeback effort in the latter half — highlighted by tries from Tanya Kalounivale, Liana Mikaele-Tū’u, and Ruahei Demant’s chip-kick recovered in the corner — the Canadian defence held firm. A late penalty from Sophie de Goede sealed the win, keeping New Zealand from overturning the momentum.

What This Means

This match marks New Zealand’s first semi-final loss since 1991, and Canada’s triumph is a testament to belief, preparation, and mental strength. Coach Kevin Rouet praised his team's composure, saying that they arrived ready to change history. Meanwhile, captain Alex Tessier emphasized focus: though emotions ran high, the team knows there’s still one more match to win.

Canada will face either England or France in the final, with hopes high of clinching their first Women’s Rugby World Cup title since being runners-up in 2014.
