Shedeur Sanders to Start Again Following Browns' 24-10 Victory

Post by : Mara Rahim

Shedeur Sanders is quickly making a name for himself in the NFL as he embarks on his second start for the Cleveland Browns. The rookie quarterback has already made history by becoming the first Browns rookie in three decades to secure a victory in his debut start. Now, he's set to take the field again after leading his team to a decisive 24-10 triumph over the Las Vegas Raiders, as confirmed by Coach Kevin Stefanski.

Stefanski commended Sanders for maintaining focus amid challenges and fulfilling the essential duties of a quarterback: winning. He noted that the growth of younger quarterbacks is gradual, and Sanders is already demonstrating progress. After a rocky debut against the Baltimore Ravens, Sanders rebounded remarkably, completing 11 out of 20 passes for 209 yards, including one touchdown against one interception. This achievement marked a notable milestone for the Browns, whose quarterbacks have struggled to surpass the 200-yard mark this season.

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees crafted a strategic game plan that allowed Sanders to find his rhythm. Many plays consisted of quick passes, with thirteen attempts under 10 yards. However, the Browns strategically took deeper shots, with Sanders connecting on two critical deep throws totaling 91 yards—most notably a 52-yard completion to Isaiah Bond in the first quarter, showcasing Sanders' ability to execute under pressure. Additionally, a 66-yard touchdown strike to Dylan Sampson on a screen play highlighted two of the longest passes for the team this season.

Another promising development for the Browns is Sanders' composure under duress. Earlier in the season, he struggled with avoiding sacks, but he managed to evade pressure effectively against the Raiders, being sacked only once despite facing eight situations where he was under pressure. Stefanski expressed satisfaction with how Sanders navigated the game's tempo and managed the offensive unit. Although there are areas that need refining, the coaching staff is optimistic that Sanders possesses the right mentality for continuous growth.

Defensively, the Browns impressed, recording an astonishing ten sacks against Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith—marking the second-highest total in team history. Myles Garrett emerged as a standout, contributing three sacks, bringing his season total to 18—setting a new team record for most sacks through the first 11 games since the official recording of sacks began in 1982. He also established a league record with 14 sacks in the last five matches.

However, challenges persist for Cleveland. The team continues to struggle with third-down conversions, improving marginally from 2-for-14 against the Ravens to 3-for-12 against the Raiders. Running back Jerome Ford faces difficulties, posting negative yardage and limited involvement. Injuries also pose a continued concern, particularly with DT Adin Huntington and TE Brenden Bates sidelined for several games.

Despite these issues, the Browns broke their 13-game road losing streak with this recent victory. Heading into their next contest against the San Francisco 49ers—with a history of favorable outcomes, winning eight of their last ten matchups at home—Cleveland is optimistic with a 2-3 record at home.

With Sanders showcasing his capabilities, a fortified defense, and a resurgence in morale, the Browns are eyeing back-to-back victories for the first time in two seasons. The team trusts in Sanders' potential to guide them into a prosperous chapter.
