Viral Video by UK Vlogger Exposes Challenges of Indian Rail Travel

Post by : Mina Rahman

Foreign travelers often document their adventures on Indian trains, sharing both positive and challenging aspects. A recent viral video from UK vlogger @backpacker.ben showcased some of the less pleasant experiences associated with this mode of travel.

In the footage, Ben detailed two incidents that left him feeling exasperated. The first involved a fellow passenger who persistently rested his foot on Ben’s seat, despite his polite requests for it to stop. “So I’m just going to have to accept it; for the next couple of hours, his foot is going to be there,” he commented.

The second frustrating moment came from a local vendor. While filming the compartment, Ben was spat on by a passenger enjoying a cucumber-based snack, leading him to express his dismay.

The video quickly gained traction, eliciting strong reactions online. Some users criticized the involved passengers, while others weighed in on Ben’s choice of travel class, noting that AC coaches and higher-tier seats provide a more pleasant experience. Responses included:

  • “Bro, if you upgrade to 2nd or 1st class, that will cost you like $5 more.”

  • “You get what you pay for. Next time, save some money and travel in better transportation modes.”

  • “You chose the local compartment and are complaining. There are perfectly good AC coaches available. Spend a little extra and travel comfortably.”

This is not the first time Ben has captured the attention of viewers with his train-related content. In an earlier video, he depicted a cleaning staff member sweeping rubbish off a moving train, raising concerns about hygiene practices within Indian Railways.

These occurrences have initiated a wider conversation on social media regarding the experiences of both tourists and locals using Indian trains, spotlighting disparities between budget travel expectations and reality.
