Dubai Initiates Season of Wulfa to Honor Emirati Heritage

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, has unveiled the Season of Wulfa, a cultural initiative aimed at celebrating Emirati traditions, values, and the bond of community.

This initiative intends to showcase Dubai's rich heritage, enhance social connections, and solidify the emirate’s status as a global hub promoting tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect among different cultures. Under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdan, Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), will oversee this season which includes a diverse array of cultural and community-oriented events.

A Celebration of Heritage and Values

The traditions of the UAE are interwoven with spiritual values, community relationships, and local customs. The Season of Wulfa will take place from Hag Al Leila on the 15th of Sha'ban, extending through Ramadan and into Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

These occasions mark significant moments in the cultural and spiritual calendar, bringing shared traditions that have influenced Emirati society for generations into a collective celebration.

The initiative is founded on three central themes: reflection, connection, and blessing, articulated through customs that evoke profound social and spiritual significance, thus nurturing harmony and fostering a sense of community.

Cultivating Identity and Belonging

The project prioritizes the preservation of cherished traditions while presenting them in ways that resonate with contemporary audiences. It aims to enhance awareness of cultural heritage, boost a feeling of belonging among various community groups, and support initiatives that emphasize the role of culture in forging a compassionate society.

A Citywide Cultural Initiative

Spanning over 50 initiatives and events at 30+ locations throughout Dubai—including neighborhoods, markets, and major cultural sites—the Season of Wulfa represents a collaborative effort involving government entities, the private sector, and local communities.

This joint endeavor aims to establish a dynamic cultural and humanitarian platform welcoming citizens, residents, and visitors worldwide, encouraging cultural exchange while honoring shared values and deep-rooted traditions.

Sheikh Hamdan: Connecting Values Strengthens Society

Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the necessity of backing creative initiatives that draw people closer to their cultural values and community identities.

“This initiative celebrates the communal spirit of the UAE while nurturing our heritage,” he affirmed. “It bolsters a sense of belonging and harmony and cultivates cultural bridges that reinforce the cohesive foundation of society. Our objective is to bring people together and foster deeper personal and social ties.”

He asserted that a society thrives through its ability to maintain its living heritage and impart its values to future generations in contemporary ways. The Season of Wulfa creates a venue where past meets present, transforming traditions into meaningful experiences that inspire participation and promote cultural identity preservation.

Sheikha Latifa: Celebrating Unity and Humanity

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed underscored that the highlights of the Season of Wulfa—Hag Al Leila, Ramadan, and the two Eids—are steeped in humanitarian values that promote positive interactions and harmonious cohabitation.

She elaborated that this season emphasizes the importance of building connections and creating warm, shared experiences that truly encapsulate the essence of Emirati culture, merging heritage with contemporary creativity through engaging and innovative activities.

“Dubai has always prioritized its cultural and social heritage,” she noted. “This heritage illustrates our collective history and lays the groundwork for shaping the future. Guided by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision, Dubai stands as a beacon of cultural harmony and a gathering point for nearly 200 nationalities contributing to the emirate’s narrative.”

She concluded that the Season of Wulfa further reinforces Dubai's image as a global exemplar of coexistence, tolerance, and harmony. Through its three guiding principles—reflection, connection, and blessing—this initiative embodies the qualities of human values, cultural depth, and genuine traditions.

Inspiring Generations to Come

The season also seeks to empower creatives and talented individuals to express their ideas through celebrations that carry a universal theme of tolerance and understanding. The program will feature innovative, multi-sensory cultural experiences that weave together heritage, spiritual values, community bonds, and modern lifestyles, grounded in local customs and hospitality.

These experiences illustrate the true essence of Wulfa—representing familiarity, closeness, and community—and aim to strengthen social ties while effectively presenting Emirati heritage to future generations.

Understanding the Meaning of ‘Wulfa’

Derived from the classical Arabic term ‘Ulfa’, the word Wulfa signifies familiarity and affection. It describes the warmth and close connections shared among individuals, perfectly capturing the spirit and purpose of this ambitious initiative.

With the launch of the Season of Wulfa, Dubai embraces a significant addition to its cultural timeline, honoring its roots while facilitating connections among individuals, communities, and cultures.
