BPL 2026 Faces Crisis as Players Protest Lead to Official Resignation

Post by : Mina Rahman

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 has plunged into turmoil following a significant boycott by star players, leading to the dismissal of a prominent official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). In a bid to adapt, the board issued a revised match schedule on Thursday after several games were canceled when players opted not to take the field, demanding a public apology and the resignation of M Nazmul Islam, who served as Finance Committee Chairman and Board Director.

According to the new schedule, matches that were supposed to occur on January 15 will now be held on January 16. Additionally, fixtures slated for January 16 and 17 will be moved to January 17 and 18, respectively, while the Eliminator and Qualifier 1, both initially set for January 19, are now planned for January 20. The BCB noted that these modifications are intended to facilitate the smooth continuation of the tournament.

The uproar began after Nazmul Islam made derogatory comments against Tamim Iqbal, the former captain of Bangladesh. He labeled Tamim as an "Indian agent" following the player’s discussion with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the venue conflict for the T20 World Cup 2026. These statements ignited a wave of anger throughout the cricketing fraternity and among players.

Key international players, such as Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, rallied via the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) to initiate a boycott. The repercussions were swift: teams set to play at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium for Thursday's matches did not show up for the toss, prompting the BCB to react urgently.

Consequently, the board held an emergency meeting and announced the removal of Nazmul Islam from his position as Finance Committee Chairman. The BCB revealed that this action was necessary to maintain the operational integrity of the board and to safeguard the honor and dignity of all players involved.

Despite this significant step, the players remain discontented. Their demand for an official public apology from Islam, alongside his complete dismissal from any position within the Bangladesh Cricket Board, continues unabated. With tensions remaining high, the future matches of BPL 2026 are under immense scrutiny as the league strives to regain stability amid the ongoing discontent.
