Blue Origin, the aerospace venture founded by Jeff Bezos, has ambitious plans with its latest announcement. The company has introduced the New Glenn 9x4, a super-heavy launch vehicle designed to revolutionize satellite deployment and advance deep space missions.
The name New Glenn 9x4 signifies its new engine setup: nine engines on the first stage and four on the second. This represents a notable enhancement, with two additional engines on each stage versus the existing New Glenn 7x2, marking a significant step forward in payload capacity and mission scope.
This unveiling comes on the heels of the successful second mission of the New Glenn rocket, demonstrating Blue Origin’s strides in developing a reusable rocket that can compete with SpaceX's Falcon series and the anticipated Starship. The 9x4 model is expected to boast a taller structure and a more substantial payload fairing than the legendary Saturn V rocket.
Blue Origin plans to operate both New Glenn models—the current 7x2 and the upcoming 9x4—concurrently. This strategy is designed to provide customers with versatile launch solutions ranging from large satellite deployments to lunar exploration, deep space missions, and national defense projects like Golden Dome.
Although a specific launch date for the 9x4 hasn’t been specified, the company highlighted that enhancements derived from the current New Glenn rocket will facilitate swift development. Industry experts observe that this strategy positions Blue Origin competitively alongside other American launch providers such as Rocket Lab, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance, all of which are enhancing their capabilities to transport larger payloads to orbit.
With this launch, Blue Origin is clearly signaling its ambition to strengthen its position within the orbital launch market. The introduction of the New Glenn 9x4 highlights the company’s dedication to pushing forward reusable rocket technology while setting new standards for payload capacity and launch adaptability.
