On May 31, a remarkable celestial phenomenon known as a “Blue Moon” will grace the skies of the UAE and the world.
The full moon is expected to start appearing on the evening of May 30, reaching its peak glow at 3:45 AM on May 31. Astronomers suggest that the optimal viewing time is just before sunrise, when the moon is low in the western sky. However, the most spectacular sighting should occur on the night of May 30, as it approaches full illumination.
Interestingly, despite what its name suggests, the Blue Moon will not take on a blue hue. This designation relates to its rarity rather than its color.
There are two variants of Blue Moons: the “monthly Blue Moon,” which is the second full moon in a single month, and the “seasonal Blue Moon,” which is the third full moon within a particular season that features four full moons.
Occurrences of this rare lunar event happen approximately seven times over a span of 19 years. After the May 2026 event, subsequent Blue Moons are slated for December 31, 2028, September 30, 2031, July 31, 2034, and January 31, 2037.
