Intensified Probe into Bhutan-India Car Smuggling Operation

Post by : Shakul

The investigation into cross-border car smuggling has escalated, as Bhutan Customs teams are now operating alongside Indian authorities in Kerala. This collaboration is part of the larger Operation Numkhor, aimed at addressing the illegal import of vehicles that has captured a national spotlight.

Led by prominent Bhutanese customs officials, the visiting delegation is in Munnar for crucial talks with Indian counterparts. Their discussions primarily focus on sharing intelligence and strategizing for subsequent actions against the suspected smuggling syndicates.

This investigation highlights vehicles allegedly brought in illicitly from Bhutan and then fraudulently registered within India. It is believed that many of these vehicles were shuttled through northeastern states before reaching various locations across the country.

Operation Numkhor has already yielded substantial results, with numerous luxury cars and high-performance motorcycles seized in Kerala. Notably, connections to influential figures have sparked greater public interest in the ongoing investigation.

Authorities estimate that as many as 15,000 vehicles could have been smuggled into India over the past years, leading to tax evasion amounting to crores of rupees. Investigators have flagged hundreds of questionable registrations, particularly in Assam.

Moreover, the Enforcement Directorate has also shown interest, probing potential money laundering aspects linked to the case. This multi-agency involvement underscores both the complexity and the extensive scale of the operation.

The continued cooperation between Bhutan and India is seen as vital for authenticating vehicle origin records and enhancing enforcement protocols. Ongoing efforts are directed at dismantling the smuggling ring and safeguarding against future infractions.
