Australian snowboarder Belle Brockhoff has announced her retirement from competitive snowboarding, just weeks shy of the 2026 Winter Olympics, owing to a series of significant injuries.
At 33, Brockhoff, a three-time Olympian, was gearing up for the Milan-Cortina Winter Games in February. However, her ongoing health struggles led to her decision to step back from the competitive scene.
She notably secured fourth place in snowboard cross during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, just missing the podium. Yet, her recent injuries proved too serious for her to continue.
In late 2024, she sustained a severe wrist fracture, and her situation deteriorated drastically after a heavy crash at a World Cup race in Georgia in March of last year, resulting in a fractured vertebra. Following the accident, she was airlifted to a hospital, where medical personnel inserted pins and rods into her back.
On Instagram, Brockhoff shared her struggles with rehabilitation, citing a compound wrist fracture and a fractured L1 vertebra in her spine.
Despite committing to months of rigorous rehabilitation and training, she felt that she had reached the limits of her physical capabilities. “After more than 20 years in snowboarding, I know in my heart it is time to step away from competitive racing,” she expressed.
Her retirement marks the end of an impressive Olympic journey and signifies a pivotal moment for Australian snowboarding.
