Head coach Ben Johnson of the Chicago Bears expressed a desire to lean even more into the running game following their impressive 24-15 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles. With 47 rushing attempts— the highest for the Bears in a non-overtime game in three decades— Johnson reflects on how they could have possibly called for more.
Running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai delivered stellar performances, each exceeding 125 rushing yards. This marked the first occurrence since 1985 that the Bears had two players rush for over 100 yards in the same match.
“That’s incredible,” Swift remarked. “Our offensive line made it manageable for us. The receivers and tight ends executed their blocks downfield, and everything aligned perfectly.”
Central to their triumph was the Bears’ offensive line, creating ample running lanes throughout the game. Johnson commended his front five, awarding them a game ball for their remarkable effort. “Without our line, this victory wouldn’t have been possible,” he noted, recognizing players Ozzy Trapilo, Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright.
Quarterback Caleb Williams grappled with challenging wind, completing just 17 of 36 passes. His passer rating of 56.9 was the lowest for a Bears win since 2006, but effective blocking from receivers and tight ends was instrumental in supporting the running game.
The Bears’ opening touchdown drive exemplified their powerful running strategy, with Swift scoring from 3 yards out after seven consecutive runs. Monangai later executed a 31-yard gain, propelling a 12-play, 87-yard drive that gave Chicago a 17-9 lead.
Finishing with 280 rushing yards, the Bears achieved a feat unseen in a decade against the Eagles. They recorded a league-high 17 first downs in the game, marking their second 280-yard rushing game this season—an accomplishment not seen since 1984.
Johnson emphasized that the Bears were constructed to excel in adverse weather conditions. With three more matches at Soldier Field and one at Lambeau Field, he aspires for the running game to anchor the team in challenging environments.
Williams contributed importantly with strategic passes, including a touchdown to tight end Cole Kmet and vital third- and fourth-down conversions, celebrating every significant run alongside his teammates.
This victory not only enhances the Bears' record but also sends a pivotal message across the league. Through a robust running game, astute play-calling, and exceptional teamwork, they managed to overpower a leading team in the NFC.
