Tragic Train Derailment Near Barcelona Claims Driver's Life

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Barcelona:

On Tuesday, a suburban train near Barcelona derailed after heavy rains caused a wall to collapse onto the tracks. The driver tragically lost their life, while 37 passengers sustained injuries, with four individuals reported to be in serious condition.

The derailment occurred in Gelida, located on Barcelona's periphery. The Catalonia regional fire department stated that the wall struck the tracks just moments before the train's arrival, leading to the derailment. Rescue operations saw all passengers safely evacuated following the accident.

Emergency services, led by inspector Claudi Gallardo, responded swiftly to the scene, deploying approximately 20 ambulances and 38 fire units to assist the injured and oversee rescue actions.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a catastrophic high-speed train crash in the Cordoba province of southern Spain, which resulted in 42 fatalities, reigniting concerns regarding rail safety standards.

The commuter rail system in Barcelona has been criticized for its lack of funding and recurring technical issues. In a related mishap that same night, services between Blanes and Macanet-Massanes were interrupted when a train axle detached from the track, according to the railway operator Adif.

Authorities are currently probing both incidents amid growing worries about the adequacy of rail infrastructure in extreme weather conditions.
