Bangladesh Urges ICC to Relocate T20 Matches Amid Security Worries

Bangladesh Urges ICC to Relocate T20 Matches Amid Security Worries

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is encountering significant disruption to its T20 World Cup plans as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally petitioned to relocate Bangladesh's matches from India, citing urgent safety and security issues for its players.

This request surfaces at a critical juncture, with the tournament slated to begin on February 7, in little over a month. Bangladesh has suggested Sri Lanka as a potential alternative hosting country, a proposal that may compel the ICC to execute a last-minute overhaul of venues, travel logistics, and match schedules.

Tensions heightened following a move by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which resulted in Kolkata Knight Riders terminating the IPL contract of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman. This incident has strained relations between the two cricket boards, reflecting wider diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh.

On Sunday, the BCB confirmed it had formally contacted the ICC, expressing worries about whether its athletes would feel safe competing in India given the current circumstances. Reports indicate that the ICC is now investigating alternative scheduling options, although this task is proving to be complex.

According to the initial schedule, Bangladesh was set to commence their World Cup journey against the West Indies in Kolkata on February 7, followed by group stage matches against Italy and England, and concluding with a game against Nepal in Mumbai. Any transition away from India would necessitate new venue arrangements, hotel bookings, broadcast coordination, and alignment with teams already organizing around the established timeline.

While administrators navigate these challenges, Bangladesh's preparations on the field remain steadfast. The BCB has announced a 15-member squad for the tournament, with Litton Kumar Das as captain, demonstrating the team's focus amidst the ongoing controversy.

Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman is letting his performances speak for him. The left-arm bowler recently delivered a clutch final over in the Bangladesh Premier League for Rangpur Riders, securing a narrow victory and showcasing his form ahead of the World Cup.

As the tournament approaches, the ICC faces the daunting task of balancing logistical considerations, player confidence, and the integrity of the competition while racing to prevent more significant disruptions to this major global cricket event.
