Bangladesh Cricket Board Faces Backlash as Players Demand Director’s Resignation Over ‘India Agent’

Post by : Saif Nasser

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has come under intense scrutiny following controversial remarks made by director M Nazmul Islam, who referred to former national captain Tamim Iqbal as an “India agent.” The comments triggered outrage among cricketers, fans, and the cricketing community across the country.

In response, the BCB issued an official statement expressing regret over the director’s words, clarifying that they do not reflect the Board’s official stance, values, or principles. The Board warned that any conduct disrespecting players or harming Bangladesh cricket’s reputation would face disciplinary action.

“The Board expresses its sincere regret for remarks that may be deemed inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful. Such comments do not reflect the values, principles, or official position of the Bangladesh Cricket Board,” the statement read. The Board also reiterated that only statements made through authorized channels represent its official position.

The controversy erupted after Tamim Iqbal called for dialogue to resolve tensions surrounding Bangladesh cricket’s ties with India, particularly regarding the release of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Instead of addressing the matter diplomatically, BCB director M Nazmul Islam publicly criticized Tamim, calling him an “India agent.”

Cricketers and former teammates, including Mominul Haque, Taskin Ahmed, and Taijul Islam, expressed strong support for Tamim and condemned the director’s statement. The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued an ultimatum demanding the resignation of M Nazmul Islam, arguing that such remarks undermine the unity and integrity of the national team.

Tamim Iqbal emphasized the importance of resolving sensitive issues within the Board before making public statements. Speaking during the trophy unveiling of the Zia Inter-University Cricket Tournament, Tamim said, “Bangladesh cricket's future comes before everything else. Decisions have to be made based on what will help Bangladesh cricket, as most of the funding comes from the ICC.”

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing uncertainty of Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup fixtures in India. The BCB requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate matches outside India, citing player safety concerns after Mustafizur’s release from KKR amidst religious tensions in Bangladesh.

The BCB statement also stressed its commitment to supporting all cricketers, past and present, and to maintaining professionalism, accountability, and mutual respect across all levels of the game. The Board assured that it will take disciplinary measures against individuals whose comments or actions harm the reputation or dignity of Bangladesh cricket.

As the controversy continues, it underscores the delicate balance between administrative decisions and player relations within national sports organizations. Experts say this incident highlights the need for measured communication, internal discussion, and respect for athletes who dedicate their careers to representing the country.

The BCB now faces mounting pressure from players, fans, and cricket associations to act decisively and ensure that national cricket remains free from divisive or harmful public statements. How the Board responds could set a precedent for governance, accountability, and the protection of players’ reputations in Bangladesh cricket.
