In response to the detainment of 53 militants from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Bangladesh has heightened security measures along its border with Myanmar due to rising hostilities in the area.
Paramilitary forces confirmed the arrest of the militants near Cox’s Bazar, a region that presently accommodates over one million Rohingya refugees. Following the detention, security personnel increased their patrols to hinder any further illegal entries.
At least two individuals have sustained injuries linked to the ongoing violence spilling over from Myanmar’s Rakhine state since January 11. Notably, a 12-year-old girl has been reported with gunshot injuries, emphasizing the escalating dangers for those living in border areas.
Officials from Border Guard Bangladesh revealed that one detained militant required medical intervention and was transported to a hospital, while the remaining members are held in police custody as judicial processes unfold.
Local sources indicated that the militants were caught shortly after their entry, prompting prompt intervention by law enforcement. Security measures have since been amplified in adjacent villages, with additional personnel deployed.
ARSA, formed as a reaction to the mistreatment of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, has been embroiled in conflicts with opposing armed factions, including the Arakan Army. Bangladeshi authorities report that fierce battles are ongoing across the border, marked by both ground confrontations and airstrikes.
A senior official characterized the situation as a tripartite conflict, with ARSA and the Arakan Army engaged in fierce struggles, while Myanmar’s military conducts aerial bombardments in the vicinity.
Residents along the Bangladeshi border have reported heightened anxiety, resulting in restricted movement and precautionary actions due to fears of stray bullets and shelling amidst visible smoke from ongoing assaults.
The Bangladeshi government has assured the populace of the sustained presence of law enforcement to diligently oversee the situation and mitigate any security risks arising from the continued unrest in Myanmar.
