Australian Deported After Overstepping Bounds at Ariana Grande Premiere in Singapore

Post by : Raina Nasser

Johnson Wen, an Australian citizen, faced deportation from Singapore following a nine-day imprisonment for an incident involving pop star Ariana Grande at the Asian premiere of the musical "Wicked: For Good" on November 13, 2025. During the event, Wen leapt over a barricade to embrace Grande, surprising both her and the audience present.

Security swiftly acted, with Grande's co-star Cynthia Erivo intervening to shield her, while guards escorted Wen away. Videos capturing this moment gained viral traction online, depicting Wen grinning and waving at the onlookers after the unexpected encounter.

Hours post-incident, Wen was arrested and charged with public nuisance. District Judge Christopher Goh remarked on Wen's "attention-seeking" behavior, noting prior disruptions that indicated a recurring pattern. Despite the serious nature of his actions, he received a sentence of merely nine days, which is less than the potential maximum of three months or a $1,500 fine.

Following his release, Johnson Wen was deported back to Australia, with Singapore’s immigration authorities imposing a ban on his return.

In court, Wen expressed remorse, acknowledging his inappropriate actions and vowing to avoid repeating them. Despite this disturbance, the "Wicked: For Good" premiere proceeded smoothly, with cast members rallying around Ariana Grande as they continued down the yellow carpet.

Ariana Grande, transitioning from her teenage Broadway beginnings to a celebrated pop icon, found her premiere overshadowed by this unwelcome incident.

This situation underscores Singapore's stringent regulations against public disturbances and the country's prompt response to ensure the safety and dignity of its events and performers.
