In a significant policy shift, Australia has officially recognized the State of Palestine. This move aligns Australia with over three-quarters of the United Nations member states that have extended recognition to Palestine. The decision was announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Prime Minister Albanese highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza as a key factor influencing Australia's decision. He referenced the deaths of aid workers, including Australian Zomi Frankcom, journalists, and tens of thousands of civilians, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention and support for Palestinian statehood.
While expressing support for Palestinian sovereignty, Australia has set clear conditions for its recognition. The Australian government has stipulated that the Palestinian Authority must ensure Hamas relinquishes its weapons, excludes itself from governance in any future Palestinian state, and holds democratic elections. These conditions aim to promote stability and peace in the region.
Australia's recognition of Palestine marks a departure from its previous stance. Historically, Australia was the first United Nations member to vote in favor of the plan that led to Israel's statehood. Despite this, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that the Israeli government must accept its share of responsibility for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The recognition has sparked varied reactions on the global stage. While many countries have welcomed Australia's decision as a step toward a two-state solution, Israel and the United States have expressed opposition, citing concerns over security and the potential empowerment of Hamas.
