Australia Triumphs in Final Ashes Test, Claims Series 4-1; Khawaja Bids Farewell

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a gripping conclusion to the Ashes series, Australia triumphed in the fifth Test against England on Thursday, winning by five wickets and securing a decisive 4-1 series victory. This match marked a poignant farewell for Usman Khawaja, who retired from international cricket after an illustrious tenure featuring 88 Test matches.

Set a challenging target of 160 runs by England, the Australian team faced some tense moments, losing five wickets during their innings. Nevertheless, they reached the required runs comfortably after the lunch break on the fifth day, with vital contributions from Cameron Green, who remained unbeaten on 22, and wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who chipped in with 16.

Australia began their chase with early setbacks, as openers Travis Head and Jake Weatherald contributed 29 and 34 runs respectively before departing. Captain Steve Smith added a modest 12 runs, while Khawaja managed just six in his final innings.

Marnus Labuschagne was pivotal in the chase, scoring 37 runs, notably being dropped when he had just 20. His unfortunate run-out came at a crucial juncture when Australia was at 121 for five, giving England a fleeting opportunity.

Despite this hiccup, Australia’s victory never seemed under serious threat. England's Jacob Bethell showcased his talent by scoring a splendid 154 runs, but the home side was eventually dismissed for 342. This total fell short of preventing Australia's dominance throughout the series.

The Ashes series highlighted Australia's strength with both bat and ball, culminating in this final match victory that served as a perfect conclusion to their campaign. Usman Khawaja's retirement was honored with a memorable send-off from teammates and fans, celebrating a career defined by perseverance and impactful contributions to Australian cricket.
