Australia is facing one of its most dangerous fire emergencies in years as fast-moving bushfires continue to burn across the southeastern state of Victoria. Authorities confirmed on Friday that three people are missing after fires destroyed homes and large areas of bushland during extreme weather conditions.
Firefighters are battling at least 30 active fires across the state as temperatures soar and strong winds make the situation worse. Officials have declared the fire danger level as “catastrophic,” the highest possible rating. Emergency crews warned that fires burning under these conditions are nearly impossible to control or defend against.
Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner said damaging winds and temperatures reaching up to 46 degrees Celsius have created life-threatening conditions, especially in the northern parts of the state. State leaders described the day as one of the most dangerous fire days Victoria has seen in many years.
Two of the largest fires are burning near the towns of Longwood and Walwa. The fire near Longwood has already burned more than 35,000 hectares of land, destroying homes, a community centre, and critical infrastructure. Officials said it remains too dangerous to enter the area, so the full extent of damage is still unknown.
Police confirmed that two adults and a child are missing in the Longwood area. Firefighters had earlier warned the family that it was too late to leave and advised them to take shelter in their home. When emergency crews returned later that day, the house had been completely destroyed by fire.
Another large fire near Walwa has burned around 20,000 hectares, including a pine plantation. While no homes have been lost there so far, authorities say the risk remains high as conditions continue to worsen.
These fires began during an intense heatwave and are the worst Australia has faced since the devastating bushfire season of 2019, when fires killed 33 people and destroyed large parts of southeastern Australia. That disaster became known as the Black Summer.
Dozens of communities have been evacuated, and many parks and campgrounds have been closed as a safety measure. Emergency services are urging residents to stay alert, follow evacuation orders, and avoid affected areas.
As firefighters continue their efforts, authorities warn that changing weather conditions will play a critical role in the coming days. The focus remains on protecting lives as Australia once again confronts the growing threat of extreme bushfires.
