ASEAN Senior Officials Discuss Urgent Food Security Issues

Post by : Shakul

Pongthai Taiyothin, Inspector-General at Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, represented the nation at the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry, gearing up for an imminent Special ASEAN Ministers Meeting. The spotlight of the gathering was on critical food security challenges facing the region.

The meeting underscored the adverse effects of ongoing geopolitical unrest in the Middle East, which has repercussions for agricultural systems. Rising energy costs, supply chain disruptions concerning fertilizers, and increased logistics expenses are seriously impacting agricultural output and food supply stability across numerous ASEAN member states.

Thailand's reliance on imported fertilizers is largely pronounced, as nearly all of its domestic needs are met through imports. Consequently, fluctuations in international markets have escalated production costs and constrained farmers' access to essential agricultural resources.

In response to these pressing challenges, Thailand has rolled out a phased approach aimed at stabilizing food production. Initial actions concentrate on securing adequate fertilizer supplies while promoting their efficient use, including a push for organic fertilizers to curtail expenses.

Immediate initiatives involve advocacy for biofertilizers, advancements in precision agriculture technologies, and renewable energy implementations to enhance efficiency. Concurrently, medium-term strategies are oriented towards research and development, soil enhancements, and embracing sustainable farming practices aligned with the Bio-Circular-Green model.

Member states of ASEAN engaged in sharing insights concerning their national contexts and deliberated coordinated responses on a regional scale. The assembly also reviewed frameworks like the ASEAN Emergency Food Reserve System to fortify collective food security efforts.

Thailand emphasized the necessity of ensuring steady availability of crucial goods, including food and agricultural resources, while fostering enhanced collaboration across sectors. The goal of these discussions is to cultivate a resilient food system in the region, capable of addressing both present and future challenges effectively.
