Amazon Announces 16,000 Job Cuts Amid AI Transition

Amazon has revealed its intention to cut around 16,000 jobs worldwide, continuing the restructuring initiative it began in October. With this action, the total number of jobs eliminated by the retail giant will approach 30,000.

This latest wave of layoffs is part of Amazon's strategy to enhance operational efficiency, streamline management, and adapt to the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in its business practices. The company significantly expanded its workforce during the pandemic but is now recalibrating its size in response to AI advancements.

The layoffs will affect various departments, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail segments, Prime Video, and human resources.

Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president for people experience and technology, emphasized that the company aims to minimize bureaucracy and empower teams. She reassured that large-scale layoffs won't become standard practice, although organizational reviews will persist.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had previously indicated that AI technology is expected to automate numerous functions, potentially resulting in a smaller workforce over time. The company is also heavily investing in warehouse robotics and AI infrastructure to boost efficiency and enhance its cloud service capabilities.

The job cuts only account for a minor fraction of Amazon's overall workforce, which exceeds 1.5 million, primarily composed of employees in fulfillment centres and warehouses.

Next week, Amazon is set to release its quarterly earnings, anticipated to shed light on its financial health and future AI strategies.
