In an electrifying start to the 2025 Laver Cup at San Francisco's Chase Center, defending champions Team Europe surged ahead with a 3–1 lead over Team World on Friday. The highlight of the opening day was Carlos Alcaraz's scintillating performance in doubles, partnering with Czech sensation Jakub Mensik.
Fresh off his U.S. Open victory and reclaiming the world No. 1 singles ranking, Alcaraz showcased his versatility in doubles. The duo faced Team World's Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen, clinching a 7–6(7), 6–4 win in the day's final match. Alcaraz lauded Mensik's skills, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their success.
Earlier in the day, Casper Ruud set the tone for Team Europe with a straight-sets victory over Reilly Opelka. Mensik followed suit, edging past Michelsen in a closely contested match. Team World's sole point came from Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, who defeated Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6–4, 6–3, preventing a European sweep.
With the Laver Cup structured to award increasing points each day, Team Europe is poised to capitalize on their early lead. The competition continues with heightened stakes, culminating in Sunday's final matches.
