Cairo, September 23, 2025 — Egyptian-British activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah has been released from prison after nearly 12 years behind bars, following a presidential pardon from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The pardon also applied to five other prisoners.
His mother, Laila Soueif, described the moment as overwhelming, saying the family’s joy would be complete only when all political prisoners in Egypt are freed.
Alaa Abd El-Fattah rose to prominence during the Arab Spring, becoming one of Egypt’s most influential pro-democracy voices. His activism, blogging, and writing made him a symbol of resistance against state repression.
He was first jailed in 2014 for participating in a protest without official approval. After a brief release in 2019, he was rearrested the same year and later sentenced in 2021 for allegedly spreading false news related to a social media post.
His release follows years of international pressure and tireless campaigning by his family, especially his mother and sisters. They organized hunger strikes, protests, and global advocacy efforts that kept his case in the public eye. Earlier this year, his removal from Egypt’s terrorism list paved the way for a pardon.
The decision to free Abd El-Fattah is seen as a rare gesture by President Sisi’s government, which has long been criticized for its crackdown on dissent. For many, it symbolizes hope for greater political reform, though skepticism remains about whether it will lead to broader changes.
While Abd El-Fattah is finally free, questions linger about his ability to travel abroad and about the fate of thousands of other political prisoners still behind bars. His release has renewed calls for deeper reforms and greater respect for freedom of expression in Egypt.
Alaa Abd El-Fattah’s release is both a moment of relief and a reminder of the power of sustained activism. His case reflects the struggles faced by many in Egypt who have fought for freedom and justice, and it raises fresh hope that more political detainees could soon follow.
