Expert Gastroenterologist Urges Caution: 7 Common Tea Mistakes That Could Harm Your Gut and Liver

Post by : Saif Nasser

In India, tea is not just a beverage; it's a beloved ritual. While it can be beneficial, an AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, emphasizes the importance of making informed choices. He recently raised concerns over common tea-drinking habits that can negatively impact gut and liver health.

Based in California and trained at esteemed institutions like AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, Dr. Sethi took to Instagram on November 14 to discuss seven habits to avoid when enjoying tea. He stated that while tea has numerous advantages, incorrect practices can gradually harm one's well-being.

1. Drinking Tea on an Empty Stomach

Dr. Sethi highlighted that consuming tea immediately upon waking can irritate the stomach lining, potentially leading to acid reflux, nausea, and abdominal discomfort.

2. Excessive Sugar in Tea

Many people sweeten their tea or opt for sugary iced versions. According to Dr. Sethi, these drinks can pack 30–40 grams of sugar, increasing the chances of developing fatty liver disease and diabetes.

3. Detox or Slimming Teas

Dr. Sethi cautioned against detox or slimming teas as they frequently contain laxatives, which may lead to dehydration, mineral imbalances, and long-term gastrointestinal damage. He strongly advised refraining from these products.

4. Overconsumption of Green Tea Extract

While green tea is generally healthy, Dr. Sethi warned that green tea supplements may pose risks, having been linked in rare cases to liver issues. Brewed tea remains the safer choice.

Other Common Missteps

Though Dr. Sethi identified seven key mistakes, his primary advice is straightforward: enjoy tea mindfully. Limit sugar intake, steer clear of processed tea products, and avoid wrong timing. Simple adjustments can safeguard your gut and liver, enhancing the health benefits of tea.
