Afeela EV Launch at CES 2026 by Sony Honda Amid US Market Challenges

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

At CES 2026 held in Las Vegas, Sony Honda Mobility made a significant statement by unveiling its Afeela electric vehicle prototype, a move that comes amid a noticeable retreat by many US automakers from the EV market. While several industry players have halted launches or scaled back production, the Sony-Honda partnership opted for the world's largest tech event to affirm its commitment to EV development.

This latest prototype expands upon the Afeela concept seen in earlier CES showcases. Highlighted by an emphasis on digital integration, connectivity, and in-vehicle entertainment, it represents Sony’s software and gaming expertise combined with Honda's rich heritage in vehicle engineering.

The company disclosed that its first production model, the Afeela 1, will start at a price of $89,900, positioning it as a luxury electric sedan designed for consumers who prioritize advanced tech alongside driving experience. The goal is to deliver this Afeela variant to US markets by 2028.

The event's significance was underscored by the decreased presence of new electric vehicles at CES 2026 compared to past years, reflecting the current challenges faced by the auto sector, including reduced demand for EVs, escalating production costs, and uncertainties linked to tariffs on imports. Consequently, many brands are reviewing or postponing their EV timelines.

The evolving US policy landscape has also played a role, as the rollback of beneficial measures, such as the $7,500 federal tax credit, has undermined consumer incentives to adopt electric vehicles. This has led to more cautious buyer behavior, impacting overall sales momentum within the EV market.

Formed in 2022, Sony Honda Mobility seeks to innovate within the electric vehicle arena, merging Honda’s manufacturing prowess with Sony’s digital landscape. By showcasing Afeela at CES, the joint venture is strategically positioning for future recovery, banking on a resurgence in demand for tech-oriented electric vehicles as market conditions improve.
