Abu Dhabi has announced a major marine restoration initiative to establish 500,000 coral colonies around the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the Al Dhafra Region. The effort forms a component of a larger ambition to produce four million coral colonies by 2030, underscoring the emirate’s expanding role in conservation science.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) will lead the programme, combining technical expertise and operational resources to rehabilitate local marine habitats. Planned coral nurseries will prioritise species selected for enhanced tolerance to rising sea temperatures, a strategic response to climate-driven stressors on reefs.
Over a three-year implementation window, the scheme targets the propagation of half a million colonies while rolling out systematic environmental monitoring. These measures aim to restore habitat complexity, support fish populations and reinforce the ecological functioning of Abu Dhabi’s coastal waters.
EAD brings a proven record to the partnership, having cultured more than 1.45 million coral colonies since 2021 as part of the Gulf’s largest reef restoration programme. Deployment of advanced nursery technologies and adaptive cultivation practices has delivered a reported 95% post-summer survival rate for transplants and a 50% rise in fish biomass in restored areas.
The initiative also exemplifies collaborative governance where environmental authorities and energy operators coordinate to align industrial activity with conservation goals. Integrating restoration efforts into infrastructure projects reflects Abu Dhabi’s approach to balancing economic development with long-term ecological stewardship.
Beyond immediate habitat recovery, the project is intended to advance scientific understanding, safeguard marine biodiversity and increase the resilience of coastal ecosystems to future environmental pressures.
