Abu Dhabi has embarked on an innovative journey in urban mobility with the launch of the world’s first modular smart vehicles. These groundbreaking vehicles are designed to connect or detach based on the needs of passengers, promising to revolutionize transportation across the emirate.
This announcement was made during DRIFTx 2025, a part of the first-ever Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, showcasing the city’s role as a global leader in advanced mobility solutions. Created by NExT, these vehicles can adapt to real-time operational demands, significantly decreasing congestion and cutting carbon emissions without requiring further infrastructure.
What sets modular smart vehicles apart is their adaptability. They can be linked together to handle larger passenger loads or split apart for individual travel, thereby optimizing traffic flow and providing an efficient solution for first- and last-mile transit. By dynamically adjusting to demand, the system seeks to improve roadway efficiency and promote sustainable transport practices.
The pilot program will kick off on Yas Island, collaborating with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub. This trial will demonstrate the vehicles’ capabilities in real scenarios and lay the groundwork for broader implementation throughout the city.
In addition to immediate transport improvements, these vehicles are also prepared to serve as a backbone for future smart operating systems and autonomous driving technologies, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision for an integrated, intelligent transportation network.
With the introduction of modular smart vehicles, Abu Dhabi is not merely redefining road transport; it is establishing a new international benchmark for adaptive, sustainable, and efficient urban mobility.
