A severe winter storm began affecting vast swathes of the United States on Friday, unleashing heavy snowfall throughout the weekend. This extreme weather led to significant disruptions in traffic, flight cancellations, and left over half a million properties without electricity nationwide. By Monday, conditions were improving with the snowfall easing, but the subsequent cold snap is predicted to linger for several days.
As the situation unfolded on Tuesday, cities mobilized emergency responses prioritizing assistance for vulnerable populations, particularly those facing homelessness. Despite improvements, over 550,000 establishments remained powerless as freezing temperatures persisted.
In New York City, the storm has resulted in 10 fatalities, marking its coldest period in eight years where temperatures plummeted to 8 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately -13 degrees Celsius). Officials reported that some victims may have been in contact with shelter services, though it's uncertain if all were indeed without homes. The city has postponed its annual homeless count to focus on immediate needs for safe shelter.
Since January 19, around 500 of the estimated 4,000 homeless individuals in New York’s streets and subway stations have found refuge in local shelters. Outreach teams are actively monitoring roughly 350 people particularly at risk due to health conditions.
Nashville, Tennessee, is grappling with over 135,000 people without power, as temperatures are expected to dip to 6 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 degrees Celsius) by early Wednesday, compounded by dangerously low wind chills. The city’s three shelters and two additional overflow locations reached full capacity while emergency services worked tirelessly to keep the community safe.
The local rescue mission, which typically serves around 400 people a night, has witnessed a surge to approximately 7,000 during this cold wave, providing essential food, clothing, and shelter. Staff have assured that no one seeking refuge will be turned away during such critical conditions.
Fatalities linked to the storm nationwide have arisen from issues like hypothermia, exposure, and heart attacks from strenuous snow removal. Tragically, in Texas, three young boys lost their lives after an accident on ice, while another individual succumbed to hypothermia in an abandoned gas station. Similar incidents have been reported in Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Michigan.
Currently, close to 200 million Americans are under winter weather warnings slated to continue through at least February 1. Meteorologists are also tracking the potential for another storm that may affect the eastern states later this week.
Officials are urging residents to stay vigilant, take necessary precautions, and check in on vulnerable neighbors as the nation endures this exceptional winter event.
