This week, Abu Dhabi’s key municipal leaders wrapped up a significant visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou, aimed at fostering collaboration in urban development and gaining insights into advanced city planning methodologies.
Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), led the delegation in discussions with governmental and academic figures, alongside industry experts. Among the officials were Hamad Hareb AlMuhairi from the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, Eng Maysarah Mahmoud Eid from the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre, and Rashed Musabbeh Al Manei from Al Ain City Municipality.
In Shanghai, meetings with Vice Mayor Zhang Xiaohong concentrated on fostering long-term municipal partnerships and exchanging knowledge on innovative urban planning. The team participated in a technical workshop with Tongji Architectural Design Group and Tongji University, delving into integrated transport and infrastructure design strategies. Their exploration of historic sites like The Bund and Rockbund yielded crucial insights into heritage preservation techniques.
The delegation also examined industrialised housing alternatives with Q‑Home, investigated AI applications in energy storage at the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Centre, and experienced cutting-edge 3D printing technology for public infrastructure at Zevo Technology, which utilises over 60% recycled materials. They additionally witnessed the Sponge City Rainwater Purification and Reuse Programme at the Shanghai World Expo China Pavilion, showcasing effective urban water management techniques.
In Hangzhou, the delegation participated in design discussions with 100architects, concentrating on placemaking, urban street engagements, and youth-centric public areas. Visits to the City Planning Exhibition Hall provided a deep dive into AI-driven urban simulations, revealing strategies for blending heritage sites with modern infrastructure while optimising land use.
This visit has equipped Abu Dhabi officials with essential insights, illustrating how Chinese cities are merging tradition with contemporary practices, thereby offering useful guidance for the emirate’s urban growth initiatives.
